Relaxation
CD featuring Japanese
harp, Koto
Detailed
Product Description:
Artist’s
Profile:
Born into the head of Matu-no-mi Koto Music School,
Mizuyo was trained at an early age by her mother, Keiko
Nosaka to play the 20 chord Koto. After graduating from
high school, she left to study at Berklee College of Music
in the U.S. She continued her studies at New England
Conservatory on the Contemporary Improvisation Major. Mizuyo
studied contemporary music under the guidance of Ran Blake
and Hankus Netsky, covering such areas as folk music and
improvisational performance. After returning to Japan,
she has been conducting performances on a regular basis
as well as working on her music to blend it with many other
kinds of music genres, freeing herself from boundaries
set by the traditional methods of performance.

Mizuyo Komiya
Brief
Description:
Relaxation
CD featuring the “Sou,” a 25 stringed
instrument
Detailed
Product Description:
The
instrument Komiya plays in this CD is a 25 stringed “Sou,” a
modern solo instrument recreated from the traditional
13 stringed Sou. With the paulownia wood forming
a smooth slope with rows of beautiful bridge stops
on the top supporting the strings, the Sou is a classic
instrument that brings tradition into our lives and
is something that serves as a bridge to a world,
introducing new sounds.
Sou
produces plenty of fresh, pure sounds but it is
also able to create many curious sounds that catch your
attention and tug at the heart. Let’s listen to
these sounds. There are, for
instance, the faint “creaking” sounds that
are created when ivory nails hit the strings. There are
also subtle sounds when the traditional technique called “oshite” (pushing)
is applied to the chords to change the pitch.

Buddhist monks
Brief
Description:
Relaxation
CD featuring monk chants and soft music.
Detailed
Product Description:
The
Sutras are philosophical writings of the truth that Buddha
acquired through his enlightenment and written down by
his disciples. Originally, Buddha’s teachings were
handed down in an oral tradition. The sutras had to be
memorized by heart in order for the teachings to be transmitted
accurately, and so the tradition of chanting the sutras
out loud came into being. But the sounds of the sutras
seem to have the effect of opening the charkas (energy
centers) of the human body as well. For us laymen, it is
extremely difficult to understand the meanings of the sutras
accurately. But we can start out by listening to this CD.
You may truthfully bring your past to mind and in all clearness
look at here and now and think of the future as it should
be for you. Or don’t think about anything difficult,
relax, close your eyes, make your breathing even, and let
yourself be with the sounds of the chanting. You may just
find yourself becoming enlightened like Buddha under the
Bodhi Tree.

Yoshida
Brief
Description:
Relaxation CD featuring the invigorating sounds of Asian drums, taiko.
Detailed
Product Description:
This CD, Yoshida’s first album, features Japanese “Taiko” drums.
The drum is said to be one of the world’s oldest known musical
instruments, and in Japanese “Taiko” is no
exception, having played an important role throughout Japanese
history as an indispensable item in divine ceremonies and
battles. Thus, the act of beating the drum involves strong
spirituality, with the drummer using every muscle in his
well-trained body to strike the drum with all of his heart.
The Japanese “Taiko,” considering its structure
and style of performance, can be said to be the most analog
musical instrument available.
Wakon
(Japanese Soul), the Japanese “Taiko” group
featured in this album, performs nationwide as well as
abroad, holding workshops at each place they visit to
come into contact with the hearts of local people. We
hope that this album, realized through their coming into
contact with Kiyoshi Yoshida’s creative image,
resonates in your soul. Enjoy the energetic groove that
flows throughout the album, and the grand scale of sound.

II |

Artist:
Kiyoshi Yoshida
Featuring Bonten
Brief
Description:
Relaxation CD featuring the invigorating sounds of Asian drums, taiko.
Detailed
Product Description:
The
newly released “Asian Drums II” is the
second of the series that was released in the wake
of its success. When we say “wadaiko,” we
the Japanese,
usually imagine a lively and energetic scene, high
in spirits and with gallantry, but it
feels to me like Yoshida has given the drums an entirely
different direction in the case of these two albums.
He does not make use of the Japanese sense of time-space or “ma,” stretching
time or making it short, but instead keeps the basic
beat as the basis of the music. It’s a good
way to blend the sounds of the synthesizer and the
wadaiko. The wadaiko, which is normally put in the
forefront is kept in the back and backs up the entire
piece. By keeping the wadaiko which can create a
world by just a single sound under lids patiently
for just a little while, the ever transforming synthesizer
which has no characteristic of its own comes to the
surface. The role of the wadaiko here is to set a
stable mono-tone feel, rather than to rigorously create a beat. The sounds that
are most often heard are shamisen like sounds
playing in unison. This is the cheerful and bright
part of the piece, these speedy phrases have the
role of pulling the music forward more and more.
The wadaiko performers in the album belong to the “Bonten” and
is led by Masataka Kobayashi.
